Variations in telephone line quality, such as noise, will cause modems on both sides to adjust the connection speed according. The actual connect speed may differ from time to time.
The connection speed depends on everything between your modem and the telephone company (on your side).
Here is a list of a few possibilities of lower speed:
• your modem's quality
• quality of your telephone cable to the phone jack
• contact quality of your telephone cable and the phone jack
• existence of interference near the telephone cable, such as fluorescent lamps, refrigerator, fax machine
• length of telephone wiring from telephone jack to Telephone Company |
Your modem should be plugged directly into the telephone jack. Telephone extension cords and telephone adapters may degrade the quality of the connection, which can result in disconnections
Dial-Up Networking settings are also a common cause of modem problems. Refer to our network settings on the support page
Refer to the FAQ about: I have a 56k modem, but I connect at a lower speed. |
