What is FTP?
File Transfer Protocol (FTP), a standard internet protocol, is an easy way to exchange files between computers on the Internet. FTP allows a user to upload files from a local source to the server where the files are hosted and displayed. Files can be deleted, renamed, or moved at the user's discretion.

FTP can also be used to download programs from a web page or to transfer large files from one computer to another.

Where can I download an FTP program?
You can download an FTP program at www.versiontracker.com or www.tucows.com
Is there a certain FTP program that you recommend?
If you are using Front Page as your html editor, it comes with a built in FTP program.
For PC we recommend WS FTP
For Mac we recommend Transmit
Do I need any information from OWC to begin using my FTP program?
Yes, you will need to set up a new profile in your FTP program and complete the following information in your FTP login window:
Profile Name:
This field is for your reference only - you can name this anything you want, i.e., "my web site".
Host Type: Automatic detect
Host/Name Address: You will be assigned a user name by our Internet Operations Office
User ID The host/name address refers to the site you are accessing, i.e., www.mydomainname.com
Password This password for your FTP access will typically be the same as your existing password for your dial up account. If you are unsure of your password, contact our Internet Operations Office at (815) 338-8685.
How do I use an FTP program?
Once you have entered the above information into the FTP login window, you will be connected to your designated, remote folder located on the OWC server.
Note:

The right window of the FTP program contains all of your remote files (files located on OWC's server).

The left window of the FTP program shows your local files.

Once the FTP program connects you to the server, you will see a folder named public_html on the remote (right) side of your FTP program. The files you will upload should reside in the public_html folder.

To transfer a local file to the server you must do the following:

Before uploading the files to the server, double click on the remote destination folder (public_html) to open.

Locate the local folder which contains the html files you wish to upload (on the left side of the FTP window).

Highlight or click on the file or files (local, left side) that you wish to upload. Click on the arrow that points to the remote files (right side). Your FTP program will indicate that the files have transferred.

Go to your web browser and type in the URL that corresponds with the page you just uploaded, i.e., http://www.mydomain.com/whatever_your_page_is_named.html, to make sure the files have uploaded properly.

Those are the basics
If you are having difficulty with web design, FTP or have html questions, please refer to your help files included with your software and/or user manuals. While OWC tries to assist our customer's as much as possible, we do not offer web design or html tutoring. There are many web sites that offer assistance online.
